Patrick Boman (* 1948 in Stockholm ) is a French-speaking writer.

Life

Patrick Boman was born in Stockholm in 1948 to a Swedish father and a French mother. When he was two years old, his family moved to France. He studied law and oriental languages (Persian and Turkish). After graduating, he lived in a rural commune in the Cevennes, and later had various jobs, including as a warehouse worker and cashier. Boman has traveled to over 80 countries and now lives in Paris, where he works as a proofreader for the news magazine L'Express .

In addition to short stories and novels, he wrote travelogues and an introduction to typography.

He became known for his series of detective novels about the British colonial investigator Peabody. The eponymous hero is Josaphat Mencius Peabody, Inspector in British India around 1900. Peabody is not a particularly likeable person. Fat, sweating, gnawed off and sometimes willing to suppress an investigation in return for sexual favors. On the other hand, he is incorruptible, shows understanding for Indian culture and speaks Hindi. As Patrick Boman said in an interview, he had an appearance of the inspector "fat, sweating, sucking on a nasty cigar and cursing in Hindi".
