Patrick Elie

Patrick Elie (born January 1, 1950 ) is a Haitian biochemist and politician .

After studying and obtaining his doctorate in Canada, he was Professor of Biochemistry at the Medical Faculty of the University of Port-au-Prince from 1980 to 1991 . 1991-94 Elie headed the Haitian anti- drug smuggling agency and was State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense in his home country in 1994/95 . Under President René Préval , he chaired the Presidential Committee on National Security. In 1996 he was arrested in the United States on charges that he was preparing an assassination attempt on then-President Preval's sister Raymonde Preval-Belot, who worked at the Haitian embassy in Washington . The case was put down following a ruling by the US Federal Supreme Court Chamber of Appeal not to admit the evidence based on the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine.
