In 1972 his first novel was published by Gallimard (La Toison). He was a French teacher at the Lycée Évariste Galois in Sartrouville and a literary critic for Le Monde .

Grainville's novels have fantastic and mythological elements. He paints and, as a writer, draws inspiration from paintings.

Les Flamboyants was rejected by Gallimard, who published his first three books, and appeared in Seuil. Three years earlier, his novel La Lisière failed in the competition for the Prix Goncourt, despite the support of Michel Tournier .
