House to the angel

The Haus zum Engel , also called Bartoszewiczowski House , is a listed building in Zamość , a town in the Lublin Voivodeship in the south-eastern part of Poland with around 65,000 inhabitants . Here you can find it at Markt 26 in the center of the village. The building was erected between 1634 and 1636 in the planned and fortress town, which is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is considered the most magnificent of the so-called Armenian houses in the city and has housed the Zamojskie Regional History Museum since 1941 .

Building description and history

The building was erected from 1632 to 1634 in the planned and fortress town of Zamość, which had only been built a few decades earlier based on designs by the Venetian master builder Bernardo Morando (1540–1600) under the Polish magnate Jan Zamoyski (1542–1605). The Haus zum Engel is part of the Armenian Houses , a group of houses that were built in the 17th century on the north side of the Great Market . Armenians once received the privilege of settling in his new city from the city's founder, Jan Zamoyski . The Haus zum Engel , in the facade of which there is, among other things, an arcade, is considered the most magnificent of the houses they have built.

It was originally constructed as a one-story building. At the top it ended with an attic . In the course of the 18th century , however, it was increased and the attic removed. One of the special features of this building is the facade. It is adorned with plant and animal motifs. The eponymous main character is that of the Archangel Gabriel, who is located on the first floor.

There are beamed ceilings inside the building. It is characterized by a decoration that is considered unique. Here there are stone reliefs depicting vines , which frame the existing twin windows, and painted friezes. The portals of the building are also decorated.

The Haus zum Engel currently houses the Zamojskie Museum , which deals with the local regional history. Sometimes the building is named after its founder, the Bartoszewiczowski House . The museum, founded in 1926, has been located in the Haus zum Engel since 1941 . The authorities of the German occupying power had assigned this house to him. It was previously located in the neighboring town hall, where some rooms were in use.
