Patrick Volkerding

Patrick Volkerding (born October 20, 1966 ) comes from North Dakota and is the founder and maintainer of Slackware - Linux .

Life

Volkerding received his Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Minnesota in Moorhead , USA in 1993 .

For a short time Chris Lumens and a few others helped him work on Slackware, but in the last few years he has been working alone again. Patrick Volkerding, also simply called Pat or more rarely The Man by Slackware fans , in contrast to many other “personalities” in the open source community, often appears in newsgroup discussions or sometimes on IRC ; he is extremely active in the community . Another difference to many other distributors is the way he works with Slackware: He himself manages the packages that are included in the official distribution. In addition, he alone determines the release cycles and makes all directional decisions himself.

Volkerding was heavily criticized by the community when he announced the complete bundling of GNOME and the sole support of KDE in Slackware for larger desktop environments .

At the end of 2004, Volkerding had to interrupt his work on Slackware due to a serious illness that caused him to be hospitalized for a short time. On November 16, 2004, he reported this to the community in his announcement and asked for help. He has now recovered from his illness.

Patrick Volkerding is married and lives in California .
