Ottoman Vice Admiral (Patrona) around 1800 (after Mouradgea d'Ohsson )

Patrona was a rank in the Ottoman Navy , which corresponded to a Vice Admiral or today's Turkish Tümamiral . The name is derived from Italian and has its model in the Venetian navy. The patrona was originally the galley that carried the admiral (or his deputy).

The patrona was the deputy of the Kapudan Pasha (admiral) as commander in chief of the fleet. The rank known since the 17th century was abolished in 1855 and replaced by the Ferik Amiral .

The flag of the Patrona and his ship was the red Ottoman with a white crescent moon and star, which was supplemented by a silver cannon in the red field.
