Paul Avis

Paul David Loup Avis (born July 21, 1947 in Walthamstow , Essex ) is an Anglican priest, theologian and ecumenist. He is the author of numerous books.

Avis studied theology at the University of London and continued his training at Westcott House Seminary , Cambridge. In 1976 he received his doctorate (Ph.D.) and was ordained anglican priest in the same year .

Avis was a pastor in the Diocese of Exeter from 1975 to 1998 . In 1989 he was appointed to the Doctrine Commission and in 1990 to the General Synod. From 1998 to 2011 he was general secretary of the Council of Christian Unity of the Church of England . In 2008 he was appointed chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II . He is co-secretary of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Committee.

Paul Avis is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University . He is the associate editor of the journal Ecclesiology .
