Paul Barret (born August 1, 1930 in Chassignelles , † July 31, 1993 in Montbéliard ) is a former French football player and coach .
Player career
Barret was accepted into the first division squad of FC Sochaux in 1952 at the age of 22 , where he played regularly with 14 appearances from his first season and was able to celebrate winning the Coupe Charles Drago in 1953 . Although he played a similar number of games as in his first year in the following years, in which there was not yet the possibility of substituting or replacing players, he was never able to establish himself permanently. After he had only played five top division games between 1957 and 1960, he decided not to change in 1960, but at the age of 29 to end his career in which he was able to book 77 top division games without scoring.
Coaching career
Following the end of his career, Barret Sochaux remained loyal, for whom he initially worked as a youth coach until he was appointed head coach at the beginning of the 1969/70 season. The third place in the table in 1971/72 meant that the coach and his team would participate in the UEFA Cup , even if it was lost in the first round. In 1975 he narrowly escaped relegation and one year later he re-qualified for the European competition, which, however, was not more successful than the previous participation. Because the club also slipped in the league, Barret had to cede his post to Jean Fauvergue in February 1977 after seven and a half years .
Shortly before the end of the 1986/87 season he was brought back to save the club from relegation from the top French division, which he did not succeed. As a result, he finally got out of a footballer career in 1987 at the age of 56, which he had completed exclusively in the first division and at FC Sochaux.
