Paul Gebauer (* 19th century ; † 20th century ) was a German water polo player .

biography

In the Reich Committee for the Olympic Games, the President of the German Swimming Association, Georg Hax, campaigned for water sports enthusiasts at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris . However, the general secretary Gebhardt distributed most of the money to the gymnasts, so the field of participants in swimming quickly assembled. Only SC Otter from Berlin responded to Hax's tender for a German team at the games . However, since Hax knew that this would have little chance, he obtained permission to send a selection team. He wanted to integrate one or two good swimmers into the team. One month before the games, however, a game by SC Otter was abandoned after the players had become insulting to the referee. The association did not want to send this team to Paris as a German representation.

In a short time, Georg Hax put together a selection team, in which he himself participated as team captain and goalkeeper. This was the hour of birth of the German national water polo team . This also belonged to Paul Gebauer from Berliner SV 1878 . The majority of the team came from Berlin. The team was strengthened with the swimmers Max Hainle from Stuttgart, Ernst Hoppenberg from Bremen and Hans Aniol , who also came from Berlin. All three also competed in the swimming competitions . In the quarterfinals, the team played against the Pupilles de Neptune from Lille . At half-time, the French were already 3-0 ahead as the Germans had difficulties coping with international rules. But in the second half, the team still managed two goals, but lost 3-2.
