Paul Horowitz (1986)

Paul Horowitz (* 1942 ) is an American physicist and electronics engineer . He is a professor in the physics and electrical engineering departments at Harvard University .

Horowitz was a radio amateur at the age of eight and studied physics at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1965, a master's degree in 1967 and a doctorate in 1970. In 1971 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). He stayed at Harvard University and dealt with scanning microscopy methods in the X-ray range ( X-ray microscopy ) and with protons, with astrophysics (e.g. pulsars) and biophysics (study of the motor of the flagellar movement of E. coli ). He was also active as an inventor with a focus on electronics (e.g. automatic machines for voting procedures, acoustic landmine detectors).

From lectures on electronics, which he gave since 1974, a well-known textbook The Art of Electronics emerged together with Winfield Hill.

He is also a leader in SETI's search for signals of extraterrestrial intelligence using, among other things, Harvard University's 84 foot radio telescope. Carl Sagan is said to have created one of the characters in the novel Kontakt based on his model and he also worked with Sagan on SETI projects. In September 1988 he said he had discovered 37 signals that he believed to be indications of extraterrestrial intelligence. In addition, he is also looking for pulsars and galaxy clusters in the early universe with the Arecibo Observatory .

He was a member of the JASON Defense Advisory Group .
