Paul Jones (* 19th November 1966 in Sheffield ) is a former British professional boxer and world champion of the WBO in the light middleweight .

Career

He started professional boxing in 1986 and only achieved a mixed match record in the course of his build-up phase. In 1989 he suffered a defeat by disqualification against the Canadian champions and later WBA world championship challenger Donovan Boucher. In 1992 he won a ten-round fight on points against the two-time European challenger Patrick Vungbo from Belgium. By knocking out Damien Denny from Northern Ireland in the first round, he won the WBO Intercontinental Championship in April 1995, which he defended twice.

With a record of 24 wins, 8 losses and one draw, he went to Sheffield in November 1995 to fight for the WBO world title against the US titleholder Verno Phillips and won over twelve rounds just on points. The title was withdrawn from him in February 1996, because he had refused to compete against mandatory challenger Bronco McKart . In December 1996 he was defeated in the fight for the British championship against the eventual European champion Ryan Rhodes.

In March 1998 he won the Commonwealth Championship against the South African Johnson Tshuma, but lost it in the first defense by disqualification to Jason Matthews . In October 2000 he still won the WBC International Super Middleweight Championship by knockout in the first round against Olivier Beard.

In May 2002 he ended his boxing career with a points win against the Albanian Kreshnik Qato.
