Paul Kircheis

Paul Kircheis (* July 24, 1896 in Elberfeld , today in Wuppertal ; † November 11, 1982 ) was a German journalist, civil servant and social democratic politician.

Live and act

Kircheis had been a member of the Socialist Youth Workers since 1910 . From 1921 he worked as an editor of the social democratically oriented Volksblatt in Solingen . He was also a member of the supervisory board of the local savings and construction association .

After the beginning of the National Socialist rule , Kircheis was imprisoned and charged with high treason . In 1936 he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for this. During the Second World War he was a soldier from 1942 and 1945 and at times in Soviet captivity.

After the war, Kircheis initially worked as an editor for the Rhein-Echo newspaper . In addition, in 1946 he was a member of the first term of office of the North Rhine-Westphalian parliament . At the same time, Kircheis had been city councilor and finally social democratic parliamentary group chairman in Solingen's city council from 1946. Between 1952 and 1961 he was a full-time assistant to the welfare department of the city of Solingen.

A street in Solingen was named after Kircheis.
