Paul Laubenthal
Paul Laubenthal (* (date unknown) in Cologne , † June 8, 1929 in Böblingen ) was a German aircraft designer and pilot.
Life
Paul Laubenthal was born as the son of a boat builder in Cologne. His brother was the painter Fritz Laubenthal .
Laubenthal was a glider pioneer in the 1920s, both as a pilot and as a designer. His most famous models were the single-seat gliders Lore and Laubenthal Württemberg , which he built for Akaflieg Darmstadt . For Wolf Hirth he designed and built, among other things, the model , the replica of which is on display in the German Glider Museum.
In April 1928 Paul Laubenthal traveled to the USA with his fellow aviators Paul-Franz Röhre and Peter Hesselbach ( Rhön-Rossitten-Gesellschaft ) at the invitation of the American Motorless Aviation Club. The aim of the six-month stay was to introduce German gliding technology to the United States and to help found an American gliding school. On July 29, 1928, Hesselbach was able to set a new permanent sailing record there with 4 hours and 5 minutes.
On June 8, 1929, Laubenthal lost control of his plane at an air show in Boeblingen and crashed. He died on the spot due to severe skull fractures.
