Paul Schobel (born June 29, 1939 in Rottweil ) is a German Roman Catholic priest , author and co-founder of the Catholic company chaplaincy in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart .

Life

After graduating from high school in Rottweil , Schobel studied Catholic theology at the universities in Tübingen and Innsbruck and was ordained a priest in 1963 . In 1966 Bishop Carl Joseph Leiprecht appointed him youth pastor of the Christian Workers Youth (CAJ) in the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . At the same time, he was also commissioned to set up the first “advice center for conscientious objectors”. In both fields of work he worked out that a Christian faith requires political commitment.

With his socially critical appearance, he polarized, especially in the Catholic Church and was mockingly awarded the title of "Herz-Jesu-Sozialist" (Sacred Heart of Jesus Socialist) by critics, which he regards as an honorary title.

In 1972 he was elected federal chaplain of the CAJ, but rejected by the German Bishops' Conference due to his political commitment. After long and heated conflicts in 1973 he was employed as an “industrial pastor” in the Böblingen / Sindelfingen area. This was an important step towards the establishment of an independent company pastoral care in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart.

He worked as a priest again and again for long periods in larger and smaller factories, including at Mercedes-Benz on the assembly line. In 1986 the "Workers and Unemployed Center" was opened in Böblingen on his initiative.

From 1991 to 2008 he headed the company pastoral care team in his diocese, which now consists of ten. At the federal level, he was instrumental in developing “guidelines for workers / unemployed pastoral care” and anchoring them in the individual dioceses. Since then, he has been a retired clergyman and volunteer in the company conflict and bullying counseling and advises and supports the Federal Commission for Company Pastoral Care. As a connoisseur of Catholic social doctrine and interpreter of the biblical message with regard to work and social issues, he lectures at trade unions, parties and in companies. In the SWR he can be heard regularly on the programs "Morgengedanken" and "Impulses" with contributions that are socially and socially critical.

In 2009, Pastor Paul Schobel was honored with the social award of the city of Böblingen for the development, management and long-term support of the company pastoral care in Böblingen as well as for the establishment of the workers' center of the city of Böblingen.
