Paul Seitz (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Seitz (born July 15, 1897 in Marseille , † February 22, 1979 ibid) was a French football player who played for Olympique Marseille for many years . He won the French Cup twice, first as an outfield player and then as a goalkeeper .

Career

Seitz joined Olympique Marseille in 1911 as a teenager . The defender made the leap into the first team at the club from his hometown and won his first title in 1919 with the championship of the Provence region . This was defended in the following two years. In football, which was still regionally organized at that time, his team developed into one of the best in the country, which is why they finally made it to the national cup final in 1924 . Together with Louis Jacquier , he formed the defensive in the game against the favored FC Cette . Marseille surprisingly prevailed 3-2 and won a national title for the first time in the club's history. Two years later, Olympique qualified for the French Cup final in 1926 and was considered a favorite in the run-up to the encounter against AS Valentigney . Seitz was called up again, but this time, contrary to his traditional position, he took the role of goalkeeper. He only had to let a ball pass and won the trophy for the second time thanks to the 4-1 final score. The fact that an actor was able to win this competition both as a field player and in the position of goalkeeper is a unique occurrence in the history of the competition.

In 1927 Marseille managed to defend their title in the Cup, but Charles Allé again guarded the gate, whereas Seitz was not called up at all. In the following time he completed a few more encounters before he left the club in 1928. During the Second World War , he briefly returned to Olympique by taking care of the first team in the role of coach between January 1942 and the following summer. This took place in the first division, which was then only unofficially held. Seitz then no longer appeared in national football and died in 1979 at the age of 81.
