Paul Würfel the Elder (* around 1365 in Vienna ; † around 1437 there) was an Austrian businessman , politician and mayor of Vienna .

Paul Würfel came from a wealthy Viennese bourgeois family, whose members at that time were repeatedly named as holders of important offices in the city of Vienna. His father Heinrich Würfel and his brother Niklas Würfel were mayors of Vienna. Paul Würfel was a city judge from 1391 to 1393 and a coin attorney in 1396.

From 1396 to 1397, 1401 to 1403 and 1404 to 1405 he was mayor of Vienna. From 1398 he was the chief bailiff of Duke Wilhelm the Friendly , from 1401 he was named councilor several times, and from 1409 to 1412 he was also a mint master. The date of his death is unclear, since his death is mentioned on the one hand for 1436, but on the other hand it could have been 1437, since he is mentioned as having already died in 1438.

meaning

Würfel was the first mayor of the city of Vienna, who was elected by the entire free citizenship due to the council election privilege of 1396, no longer by the Inner Council and the named college as before.
