Paula Therese Hammond (* 1963 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American chemical engineer and materials scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is best known for her work on the formation of nanomaterials from macromolecules .

Live and act

Paula T. Hammond earned a bachelor's degree from MIT in 1984 and initially worked for Motorola for two years in the development of integrated circuit packaging . In 1988 she obtained a master's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. again in 1993 from MIT with Michael Rubner. , each in chemical engineering . She worked as a postdoctoral fellow with George Whitesides at Harvard University .

Hammond has held a professorship at MIT since 1995. Here she is (as of 2019) David H. Koch Professor of Engineering , Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT.

Hammond uses electrostatic forces and other intermolecular forces to develop functional systems (including layer-by-layer systems ) with highly controlled structure for electrochemical and biomedical applications. This includes novel biomaterials for spatially and temporally controlled surface release of active ingredients . According to the Scopus database (as of December 2019), Hammond has an h-index of 89.

Hammond has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2006 . She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013, the National Academy of Medicine in 2016 , the National Academy of Engineering in 2017, and the National Academy of Sciences in 2019 .

Paula Hammond is a second marriage and has one daughter.
