Pavel Vodák

Pavel Vodák (born June 7, 1920 in Prague , † March 16, 2002 in Steinheim , Westphalia) was a Czech psychiatrist, neurologist and pediatrician.

biography

Vodák was the son of a Czech father and a German mother. He spent his youth in Budweis , where his father worked as an officer in the Czech garrison. Pavel Vodák graduated from high school in Budweis in 1939.

Then the family moved back to Prague.

In October 1939 he began studying medicine at Charles University in Prague . In the course of the university's closure by the National Socialists, he was forced to work in a factory on Prague's waterway for three years before he could continue his studies in Prague and Heidelberg. He received his doctorate as Dr. med.

Vodák later became the chief physician at the Prague Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In 1968 he was committed to the reforms of the Prague Spring . After its suppression, he saw no future in Czechoslovakia and fled with his family to Germany via Yugoslavia in June 1970.

Until his death he worked in Warburg, Westphalia: first as chief physician of the curative education center Laurentius in Warburg, later as a resident child and youth psychiatrist. He lectured at the universities of Hanover and Dortmund.

In the last years of his life he wrote down his memories. This autobiographical manuscript comprised around 1000 pages. These documents in 2017 was created by the author Sandra Brökel a family novel, which in February 2018 under the title The hungry crocodile in Pendragon Verlag published Bielefeld.
