Abel Jean Baptiste Pavet de Courteille

Abel Jean Baptiste Pavet de Courteille (born June 23, 1821 in Paris , † December 13, 1889 in Paris) was a French orientalist . He was the grandson of Silvestre de Sacy on his mother's side and, at his suggestion, devoted himself to the study of oriental languages, especially Turkish . His main work is his "Turkish-oriental dictionary" ( Dictionnaire turc-oriental , Paris 1870).

In 1854 he became an associate professor and in 1861 a full professor of Turkish at the Collège de France . In 1873 he succeeded Emmanuel de Rougé at the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .

With Barbier de Meynard , he published the first three volumes of the historiographical work Les Prairies d'Or des Mas'udi in a bilingual edition (Arabic with French translation) ( Société asiatique , Collection d'ouvrages orientaux ). He translated several works from Turkish and Uighur .

With Abdolonyme Ubicini he published the work État présent de l'empire ottoman (1876).
