Charles Pellat

Charles Pellat (born September 28, 1914 in Souq Ahras , Algeria, † October 28, 1992 ) was a French Arabist and lexicographer .

He was professor of Arabic at the Collège Louis Le Grand (1947–1951), at the École des langues orientales (1951–1956) and at the Sorbonne (1956–1978) and since 1984 a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .

He was one of the editors of the Encyclopaedia of Islam .

He translated several works by al-Jahiz (777-869) into French, including the works Le livre des avares , Livre des mulets and Le livre de la couronne, which is attributed to him .

His translations formed the basis for the translation into German in the anthology Arabische Geisteswelt .
