Pavilion in the Westfriedhof

The pavilion on the Westfriedhof is a listed building in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the Westfriedhof immediately south of the main entrance in Magdeburg's Stadtfeld West district at the address Große Diesdorfer Straße 160.

Architecture and history

The pavilion, characterized by its clear design, was built in the New Building style in 1929/1930 based on designs by Johannes Göderitz and Fritz Kneller for the Magdeburg Building Department. The building, which appears cubic and transparent, was created using a lightweight reinforced concrete structure . The sales area is completely glazed and covered with a flat roof. A colonnade-like colonnade is arranged around this space, the roof of which rests on slender, square pillars.

At the rear there is a small wing for the office and warehouse, which, however, protrudes from the central position to the northwest. This area has narrow, upright windows.

The pavilion is listed as a monument in the local register of monuments under registration number 094 70736 .

The pavilion is considered to be a particularly remarkable and successful example of new building and is significant in terms of architectural history. In terms of urban history, it is a symbol of Magdeburg as the city of new building in the 1920s. The good integration of this building into the surrounding neo-Gothic development is also emphasized .
