Pavonis Mons is a shield volcano on Mars that was named in 1973. It lies on the equator and is the middle of the three Tharsis Montes in the Tharsis region . The extinct volcano has a diameter of over 300 kilometers and a height of around 12 kilometers compared to its surroundings.
Today it is discussed whether lava flows from Pavonis Mons helped shape the Vallis Marineris .
