The Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology is an archaeological and ethnological museum and belongs to Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) . It was founded in 1866 and is named after George Peabody , who donated $ 150,000 to the museum in 1866, which was an extraordinary amount for the time. The first curator was the American anatomist and physician Jeffries Wyman . The Peabody Museum is known for its anthropological collection , which includes more than 1.6 million objects with a focus on North and Central America and Oceania. The Harvard Museum of Natural History is housed in the same building . From 1958 to 1977 the Maya researcher Tatiana Avenirovna Proskouriakoff worked at the Peabody Museum.

There is another museum donated by Peabody and named after him, the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University .
