Pearnel Charles

Pearnel Charles (* 1936 in Macedonia , Saint Ann ) is a Jamaican politician ( JLP ) and trade unionist ( BITU ). From September 2007 to January 2012 he was Jamaica's Minister of Labor and Social Security .

Life

Charles attended West Indies College and studied political science at the City College of New York in the USA. Since his return to Jamaica in 1965, he worked for the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), temporarily serving as the union's vice-president.

Charles also joined the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) in the 1960s. He was 1967-1976 Councilor ( Councilor ) of Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC). In the JLP he was deputy party chairman ( Deputy Leader ) between 1972 and 1991 .

He was senator for two terms between 1972 and 1980. In the parliamentary elections in 1980 and 1983 he was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the JLP for the constituency of East St. Thomas . During the JLP government from 1980 to 1989, he was Minister for Public Utilities in Prime Minister Edward Seaga's cabinet . In 1989 Charles was able to win his constituency again, but the JLP lost the government majority. Charles was an opposition member of the House of Representatives until 1993.

In 2002 he made it back into the House of Representatives, he was elected in the Clarendon North Central constituency.

After Seaga announced his resignation as chairman of the JLP in 2004, Charles emerged as the only challenger to Bruce Golding in the internal dispute over the successor . The election planned for November 2004 had to be postponed after Charles initially filed legal action against the selection of the party congress delegates. The successor was only decided after Charles withdrew his candidacy and Golding was elected party chairman in February 2005.

In the general election on September 3, 2007, Charles was re-elected in the Clarendon North Central constituency. The JLP achieved the government majority in this election, Charles was sworn in as the new labor and social affairs minister on September 14th. In the election on December 29, 2011, he was able to defend his parliamentary seat again, but the JLP lost the election, so that Charles resigned from the ministerial office.

Charles is married and has seven children. Prime Minister Bruce Golding is his brother-in-law.
