Pebble Island ( Spanish : Isla Borbón ) is one of the larger Falkland Islands with 88 km² . The island is located north of West Falkland at the north-western end of the archipelago and has been used as sheep pasture by British settlers since 1846 .
The island has a hotel, an airfield and a golf course. It is divided into the marshland in the east and the mountainous west. At 6.4 kilometers, the longest sandy beach in the Falklands, Elephant Beach , is partly used as a landing strip.
In the Falklands War , the island was occupied by Argentina , who set up a military airfield . British SAS commandos, supported by warships, however, destroyed the base in a commando operation on the night of May 14th to 15th, 1982.
