The place Pecém is located in the district (município) São Gonçalo do Amarante in the state of Ceará in Brazil about 60 km from Fortaleza . Until 1995 it was a quiet beach town on the Atlantic coast, which served as a weekend getaway for the residents of Fortaleza and is located between the well-known beaches of Cumbuco and Paracuru.

economy

In March 1995, the government of the state of Ceará began to plan a deep-water port here, which should relieve the port of Fortaleza and which also lacked the corresponding draft. For this purpose, a fairway was deepened and an international seaport terminal for container ships was created together with a terminal for liquid products. The new port was inaugurated in March 2002. Since then, the Danish shipping company APMøller has held a 50% share in the operation of the container terminal and in 2007 143,000 TEU container units were handled there (approx. 20% more than in 2006 / source CearaPortos).

In addition to containers, this port also handles liquid cargoes (fuel and liquefied gas), bulk cargo (fertilizers) and semi-finished steel products. In the last few years the export of fruit in Ceará has developed strongly. The cultivation and export of pineapples plays an important role here. In this context, Pecém has developed into the main export port for fruit products in refrigerated containers. The main road "Sol Poente" passes the port very close and the construction of the access to the port of Pecém was completed in 1998. This means that the port is well connected to the hinterland road network and the state capital Fortaleza .

environment

In December 2008, the Brazilian environmental authority IBAMA applied to CearaPortos, the port operator of Pecém, that a wave power plant should be built in a pilot project to generate the electricity required for the port and the surrounding region. Together with the Universidade Federal of Ceará - UFC and the Universidade Federal of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ, a concept for the realization of the wave power plant is being developed. The output will be designed for 50 kW. With this project, the state of Ceará will become a pioneer in the use of wave power in South America. It is hoped that this will create a model for clean power supply in other coastal regions in Brazil.
