Pedro António Avondano (born April 16, 1714 in Lisbon , † 1782 ibid) was a Portuguese violinist and composer .

Life

Avondano's father Pietro Giorgio came from Italy and was a violinist in João V's Lisbon court orchestra . Little is known about Pedro Avondano's life. It is reported that Pedro Avondano, who in 1767 acquired the title of Knight of the Order of Christ for 480,000 réis, “earned his life with the violin [which his father had taught him] and that he used it on all occasions, ecclesiastical as well as secular, where he was called, played, and that for years he had been giving public balls in his own house for the Assembleia das Naçoens Estrangeiras (Association of Foreigners in Lisbon) and for compatriots, mainly English people ”(José Mazza: Dicionário biográfico de músios portugueses. Foreword and notes by José Augusto Alegria. In: Occidente 23-26, 1944/45. - 37, 97 f.). These concerts are considered to be the first known public concerts in Lisbon.

While Avondano's two symphonies are reminiscent of works by Handel and Rameau, his trio show the then new, sensitive style. Most of Avondano's compositions are in Belgian and German libraries. The reasons for this are not yet known. The Lisbon Minuets were released in London. It is also unclear why his oratorio The Sacrifice of Isaac was published in German.
