Pedro Huarte-Mendicoa Larraga (born April 27, 1905 in Pamplona , † September 1, 1991 in Spain) was a Spanish pilot and aeronautical engineer.

Life

In 1921 he began his career in military service at the Academia de Artillería . In 1927 he became a pilot in the group Observador de aeroplano de guerra . On January 20, 1931, he received his doctorate in mechanical engineering. In 1932 he became a professor in the Faculty of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the Escuela Superior de Aerotecnia Military Academy .

In 1936, in preparation for the coup at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he took an active role in association with Emilio Mola and was briefly imprisoned. During the Second World War he was the head of the project office of the General Management of the Ejército del Aire and designed some aircraft in Cuatro Vientos , Madrid . Among the developments, for example, the Huarte Mendicoa HM-1 named after him was mass-produced and made its first flight in April 1942.

Pedro Huarte-Mendicoa Larraga was also involved in the establishment of the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeronáutica (later known as (INTA) Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial ) at the end of 1942 and worked as a test pilot. In 1946 he was appointed director of CASA's development department by the Ministry of Aviation . He was also involved in the projects of the CASA C-201 “Alcotán” , CASA C-202 “Halcon” and CASA C-207 “Azor” . In 1960 he was appointed to the board of the CASA and director of the Industria Aeronáutica within the Departamento del Gobierno de España Ministerio del Aire . At the end of 1973 he retired as major general in the reserve.
