The new bascule bridge from Loitz

The Peene Bridge in Loitz is a river crossing over the Peene near Loitz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Already before 1610 there was a fixed Peene crossing near Loitz. In order to meet the requirements of industrialization, the swing bridge , which no longer exists today, was built in 1886/87 . In 2010 it was the oldest hand-operated swing bridge in Europe. The passage height was 1.7 meters, the passage width 11.50 meters. In terms of construction, it was a two-legged swing bridge. To move the bridge, a T-shaped bar was used on the central pillar (at the center of the roadway), which was rotated by two workers. The bridge had a 2.2 meter wide carriageway with no pedestrian walkways. It was opened to ship traffic several times a day, the last time in autumn 2010. However, when closed it could be crossed under with a canoe or folding boat. The bridge was dismantled in January 2011 and replaced in September 2012 by a two-lane bascule bridge including a one-sided cycle path and no tonnage limit. In order to guarantee the ship traffic on the Peene, the new bridge is also opened several times a day.

In October 2011, a Slavic boardwalk was uncovered during the construction work for the new bridge access.
