Irv Kluger

Irving "Irv" Kluger (born July 9, 1921 in New York City , † February 28, 2006 in Las Vegas ) was an American swing drummer and vibraphonist .

Kluger first studied violin at the Henry St. Settlement School and composition at New York University and took private drum lessons. He started playing professionally when he was 15. At first he was with Bob Astor , but his first permanent engagement was in 1942/43 with Georgie Auld (with whom he recorded). He then played with Bob Chester and Freddie Slack (1943/44), 1945 to 1947 with Boyd Raeburn and then with Herbie Fields and Bobby Byrne (1947). In 1947/48 he was with Stan Kenton , in 1949 with Tex Beneke and in 1949/50 with Artie Shaw . 1950 to 1953 he played in the orchestra of the musical Guys and Dolls and 1953/54 with Artie Shaw ( Gramercy Five ). After that he was a studio musician and freelancer in Hollywood. In the mid-1950s he was in the house band of the Moulin Rouge show theater in Hollywood.

He recorded with Ella Fitzgerald , Dizzy Gillespie (1945), Dave Pell (1956), Bud Powell , The Four Freshmen , Les Paul (in addition to the big band recordings). He later played with Benny Goodman and Woody Herman, among others .

He never recorded under his own name.
