Peggy Kleinplatz

Peggy J. Kleinplatz is a Canadian psychologist and sexologist , best known for her work in which she criticizes the medicalization of human sexuality .

Life

Kleinplatz graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BA (Honors) in Psychology in 1981 and a Ph.D. in 1987. She served as Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of Ottawa and is an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University .

Kleinplatz and medical doctor Charles Allen Moser argue that all paraphilias such as BDSM and pedophilia should be removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Kleinplatz wrote that "the DSM criteria for diagnosing unusual sexual interests as pathological are based on a number of unproven and, above all, even untested assumptions." She has also criticized the medicalization of women's bodies through concepts such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder and dyspareunia .
