The Peinkammertor (Pol. Katownia) emerged in the second half of the fourteenth century, the coal market as part of the fortifications of the Danziger right city . Together with the tower , it formed a defensive structure for the Langgasse .

history

The Peinkammertor was rebuilt in 1593–1604 by Anton van Obberghen . The decoration is the work of Willem van der Meer. In 1508–1509 Michael Enkinger raised the gate to its present height.

After the construction of more modern fortifications, the torment chamber gate was converted into a torment chamber , a courtroom and a prison. On the east side there was a pillory , the place of many executions.

The gate was rebuilt after the war. The individual phases of the history of the building are clearly exposed on the brick walls.

The building houses the Amber Museum as a branch of the City History Museum of Gdansk.
