history

Coal Market, 1905

The place at the St. Gertrauden Hospital was also mentioned when the legal town was granted town charter around 1343. He should get the same freedoms as the legal city, but lie outside the city limits. In 1473 it was mentioned as Dominiksplan because the Dominiksmarkt took place there. At that time there was probably already a wood and coal market there.

Around 1600 the armory was built on the eastern side. In the following decades the square was included in the right town after the construction of a city fortification system. On the western side there was a large market for all sorts of small things (junk), with the names Tagete and Große Vendet . On the east side it was temporarily called the pea market .

In 1801 the city theater was opened on the northwest side. Since 1896 a tram ran in a north-south direction across the square. The luxury hotel Danziger Hof was opened in 1899 and there was a taxi rank since 1906. Around 1939 the square was renamed Theaterplatz . In 1945 the development of the square was largely destroyed.

Since 1945

Event on the coal market

After 1945, reconstruction work began on most of the major historical buildings. In 1967 the theater was reopened in a modernist style. In 1971 tram traffic was stopped.

The square is currently often used for cultural events; the Dominican market and a Christmas market take place there every year. The rest of the time it is one of the largest parking lots in the city center with parking fees.
