Peintres de la Réalité (artist group)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peintres de la Réalité [pɛ͂tʀ də la ʀealite] (French for "painter of reality") was founded by Henri Cadiou after the Second World War to bring together painters who had specialized in still life or genre motifs. It later developed into the Mouvement Trompe-l'œil / Réalité (French for "movement optical illusion / reality"). The group's painting is not a re-appearance of antiquity or the 17th century, but the logical consequence of the development of a realism that took place in the 20th century, which has taken the succession of surrealism to lead to the modern trompe-l'œil .

Cadiou explains: “The Peintres de la Réalité accept the undertaking to transfigure the most arduous objects thanks to a sensitive and cordial execution. When necessary, they would spend weeks or months trying to achieve the softness, suppleness and strength that are the hallmarks of a successful painting ”.

In 1973 the group exhibited at the New York Cultural Center and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. In 1989, after the death of Henri Cadiou, Pierre Gilou continued his father's work within the group. In 1993, as part of the Grand Palais in Paris, the big event of the group "le triomphe du Trompe-l'oeil" achieved a sensational success with more than 65,000 visitors in two weeks.
