Pemuteran is a village in the northwest of the Indonesian island of Bali . Largely spared from the effects of tourism, the village has so far retained its original character - like some other places on the island.

Location and population

The place is about 3½ hours by car from the capital Denpasar . The population consists of around 65 percent Hindus , 30 percent Muslim and 5 percent Christian . A key feature is the Hinduism which promotes the harmonious coexistence.

The development of tourism is still in its infancy. The place has a wide sandy beach that slopes gently into the water. A natural reef with a light sandy beach begins on the eastern edge of the village , which merges into an artificial reef in the west, the beach of which consists of dark volcanic sand.

Artificial reef

With around two hectares, the artificial reef is the world's largest project and was initiated by the Global Coral Reef Alliance . It consists of different constructions made from different materials. A small amount of electricity is conducted through the Biorock steel cages . This increases the growth of the corals many times over.

The reef serves as a refuge for crocodile fish , scorpion fish , clown fish , nudibranchs and flatworms , lion fish , colorful feather stars and, for example, also for hermit crabs , whose snail shells are overgrown with anemones .
