Penápolis , officially Portuguese Município de Penápolis , is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . The population was 58,510 in 2010. The area of the city covers 710.8 km².
location
The city is east of the intersection of the two Brazilian highways SP-300 and SP-425 . The Represa de Promissão reservoir is about 20 km to the northeast and São José do Rio Preto is about 50 km away in the same direction.
history
On November 17, 1909, the former settlement was named in honor of the recently deceased President Afonso Pena in Vila de Penapolis and was given city status on December 22, 1913. Penapolis became a judicial district in July 1918.
The original large area of the city of Penápolis went as far as the Paraná river , but was gradually divided and reduced with the establishment of new cities.
