Pengo is an arcade game from Sega and was released in 1982 . The player takes on the role of Pengo, a red penguin who lives in Antarctica. The game takes place in a labyrinth, which consists of blocks of ice and is guarded by "snow bees". The aim of the game is to survive as long as possible by trying to eliminate all "snow bees" in each game round.

Game description

The player has a joystick and a fire button. When the fire button is pressed, Pengo pushes a block of ice forward away from him. The ice block slides in this direction until either a wall or another ice block is hit. Any snow bees in between are killed.

New snow bees are hatched in eggs that are in a few blocks. At the beginning of each level, the ice blocks containing the snow bee eggs flash briefly in the color of the snow bees of the respective level. As soon as a snow bee has been eliminated, a new one will appear from the eggs mentioned above. To prevent this from happening, Pengo can destroy the blocks of ice that the eggs are in. This is also the most effective way to get rid of the snow bees. As soon as enough snow bees have been killed and there are no more eggs in the level, a new level starts.

There are two different types of blocks. Normal blocks disintegrate when intended to be moved forward, but behind another block or a sidewall; but it is possible to eliminate eggs hidden in this way.

Diamond blocks are indestructible; however, if they are arranged in a straight line (horizontally or vertically) the player gets 10,000 bonus points and the snow bees are paralyzed for a short time. If at least one diamond block touches a sidewall, there are only 5000 points. Even if you line up the diamond blocks several times in the same level, you only get bonus points the first time.

Snow bees can also be destroyed with the help of the side walls. If you press a side wall, a snow bee, which is also located next to the wall, will be paralyzed for a short time and the player can eliminate the paralyzed snow bee by running over it.

If you have played for 60 seconds without killing a snow bee, a so-called sudden death mode is activated. If there are still at least two snow bees in the level, they will become faster and more aggressive. If there is only one remaining snow bee in the level, it disappears as soon as it has reached one of the four corners. There are only 18 levels in total that are repeated.

Cutscenes

Similar to Pac-Man , Pengo also has short cutscenes that appear after the bonus distribution at an even-numbered level. The cutscenes each contain eight penguins doing different things.

  • In the first cutscene the penguins march a bit.
  • In the second cutscene the penguins wiggle their butts.
  • In the third cutscene, each penguin greets the player.
  • In the fourth cutscene, the penguins turn towards the player and do jumping jacks as soon as they leave the screen.
  • In the fifth cutscene you see Pengo sitting at the piano and playing the background music.
  • In the sixth cutscene Pengo steps forward behind the piano and plays " peek-a-boo " with the player .

The score for destroyed snow bees varies depending on the number of snow bees killed:

  • 400 for a snow bee
  • 1600 for two snow bees
  • 3200 for three snow bees
  • 6400 for four snow bees

Walking over a paralyzed snow bee: 100 points.

The score for diamond blocks:

  • 500 points for a destroyed block of ice with an egg hidden in it.
