Penicuik South Church

The Penicuik South Church , also Penicuik South Kirk , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Penicuik in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

After the Scottish church split in 1843, it became necessary to build a church for the Free Church of Scotland in Penicuik. The building on West Street soon became too small, so that a new church was built in the early 1860s. The Scottish architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington was commissioned with the planning . The construction costs of today's Penicuik South Church of £ 2050 were met from donations. After the foundation stone was laid on May 20, 1862, the church was completed on September 4, 1863. With the reunification in the 20th century, the building came back to the Church of Scotland. In 1989 brown rot was found and the church was restored within a year.

description

The neo-Gothic building is located on Peebles Road ( A701 ) on the southern edge of Penicuik. It is one of the few buildings on the east bank of the North Esk . The east-facing front is designed with a narthex consisting of a four-axis arcade . The paired columns support the massive pointed arch arcades . Their capitals are individually ornamented with foliage. Four passports are arranged between the arches ; there is an elaborate tracery above . The entrance portal is on the right of this gable side. The bell tower rises a little set back, in the foot of which the two-winged main portal is embedded. This is designed with a pointed canopy. The three-story tower has a square floor plan, but merges into an octagonal structure above the first floor . It closes unexpectedly with a flat roof above the tower clocks. Originally a pointed helmet was planned, but this was not implemented. All roofs of the church are covered with gray slate.
