Penne (pasta)
Penne are pasta in the shape of a crooked cylinder . Penne is the plural of Italian penna , derived from the Latin penna (means something like feather or quill ), and is a relative of the English word pen = (writing) pen. The ends are always cut at an angle, similar to a quill pen.
species
Two main types are produced: Penne lisce (smooth surface) and Penne rigate (corrugated surface). There are also Pennoni sold ( "large quills"), which represent a larger version of Penne. The same or a similar shape, usually slightly larger, is called Mostaccioli (means "small mustache"). They can also be either smooth or corrugated on the surface.
preparation
Penne are usually cooked al dente , i.e. still firm to the bite. Due to their shape, they are particularly suitable to be served with sauces ( sugo , pesto , arrabbiata ). They can hold a lot of sauce with their cavity and flutes. They are also popular for pasta salad .
