Penobscot and Kennebec Railroad

The Penobscot and Kennebec Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded on April 7, 1845 and operated a 88.8 kilometer railway line from Waterville to Bangor . Since the Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad connected in Waterville , it was decided to use the same gauge of 1676 mm . Construction began in 1852 and the line was completed by August 1855.

On November 30, 1856, the Penobscot & Kennebec was leased by the Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad for 20 years. After the construction of further routes was decided, the two companies merged on October 28, 1862 to form the Maine Central Railroad . The line was changed to standard gauge in 1871 and is now used by Pan Am Railways .
