Peperino
Peperino , also called peperin , peperit , pepper stone (ancient: Albanus lapis ), is an ash-gray or greenish-gray basaltic tuff with constricted angular fragments of dolerite , leucite , augite , mica etc. It is mainly found in the Alban Mountains near Rome . It was used as a building material in ancient times. Nowadays it is mainly used for building blocks or floor slabs and for stone carving.
In addition to the gray type (Peperino Grigio) there is a reddish type (Peperino Rosso). These natural stones cannot be polished, but they are frost-proof.
