Peppino De Filippo (born August 24, 1903 in Naples , † January 27, 1980 in Rome ) was an Italian actor .

Life

De Filippo is the son of Eduardo Scarpetta and Luisa De Filippo and the brother of the actors Titina and Eduardo . After a difficult childhood and adolescence in boarding schools, De Filippo discovered his passion for acting and made his debut in the ensemble of his foster father Vincenzo Scarpetta , who had the entire family under contract. After a short time De Filippo felt the urge to play more than secondary roles in dialect comedies and dramas; he switched to other companies. In 1925 he came under contract with Salvatore De Muto , where he developed into a master in the field of improvisation. He later appeared with brother Eduardo in Rocco Galdieri's La rivista che non piacerà . Peppino and Eduardo then founded their own theater company, the Teatro Umoristico I De Filippo , in the early 1930s . From the premiere in the Kursaal in Naples on December 25, 1931, when they performed the self-written Natale in casa Cupiello , they enjoyed great audiences in numerous Italian cities. They continued this ensemble until 1944, staging and playing pieces by other authors.

The first film offers were made at the beginning of the 1930s; initially they took advantage of the shared popularity and included sister Titina. In 1941 Peppini De Filippo played his first leading solo role in Notte di fortuna ; after the Second World War he mostly went his own way and showed solid performances in comedies on stage and in films, but was also capable of psychologically differentiated portraits such as in the lights of the variety theater. The greatest successes, however, came from the collaboration with Totò ; The duo was able to show the perfection of their collaboration in several films. De Filippo's total filmmaking includes just under 100 films.

De Filippo was occasionally seen on television; his most famous embodiment in this profession is "Gaetano Pappagone"; the fictional character led with inimitable language and burlesque comedy through the show "Canzonissima" in the 1966/1967 season. In addition to some expected comedies, De Filippo's portrayal in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker from 1977 stands out.

De Filippo has a son, Luigi, who also worked as an actor with his first wife Adele Carloni. After separating from Carloni, he lived with the actress Lidia Màrtora Maresca, whom he married on her deathbed in 1971. In 1977 De Filippo remarried; the actress Lelia Mangano played in his ensemble.
