Peregrinus of Auxerre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peregrinus of Auxerre (French Pèlerin d'Auxerre , Pérégrin, holy Pérégrin, Latin Sanctus Peregrinus ) (~ around 304 ) was a Catholic priest and is considered the first bishop of the diocese of Auxerre . He was canonized in 1726. May 16 is celebrated as the name day .

Life

According to tradition, Peregrinus was sent to Gaul by Pope Sixtus II , where he successfully evangelized in the Auxerre area. Whether he actually held the office of bishop is controversial; only centuries later is he named as the first bishop in a chronicle of the diocese of Auxerre. In the Diocletian persecution of Christians, perhaps also in the Valerian persecution , he is said to have been beheaded as a martyr .

Name origin

In late Latin , the term pelegrinus was derived from peregrinus for pilgrims (fr: pélerin ); "who travels abroad".

saying

In the Yonne department there is a saying: "On Saint Pelerin (May 18th) neither bread nor wine freezes".
