The diocese of Auxerre ( Latin : Dioecesis Antissiodorensis ) was a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France located in the north of the country . The bishopric was in Auxerre .

history

The diocese of Auxerre was established in the 3rd century . The first bishop was Peregrinus of Auxerre . Since the end of the 4th century, the diocese Auxerre was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Sens as a suffragan .

In the 17th century it comprised over 200 parishes and was one of the centers of Jansenism . There were twelve abbeys and 30 priories in the Auxerre diocese . The cathedral of St. Stephen of the former bishopric is a major work of the Burgundian Gothic .

On November 29, 1801, the Diocese of Auxerre was dissolved as a result of the Concordat of 1801 by Pope Pius VII with the Papal Bull Qui Christi Domini and the territory was incorporated into the Diocese of Troyes . The diocese Auxerre was re-established on July 10, 1817 by Pius VII. On September 4, 1821, the diocese of Auxerre was dissolved by Pius VII with the papal bull Nostris sub plumbo and its territory was united with the archbishopric of Sens.

It has been the co- cathedral of the Archdiocese of Sens-Auxerre since 1823 .
