The Parchment Maker Walk is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The 180 meter long parchment making corridor is located in the south-eastern part of the old town island, in the Johannis Quartier . It goes from Mühlenstraße between St.-Annen-Straße and Königstraße , zigzagging first eastwards, then north and then northeast, until it meets Aegidienstraße at the junction with Schildstraße and ends through an underpass .

history

The name Parchamentmachergang is misleading in two respects, as on the one hand it sounds like a name that has been handed down from ancient times, which, as with other Lübeck streets , seems to be derived from the craftsmen who lived there in the Middle Ages . On the other hand, the name suggests one of the typical Lübeck residential corridors . However, neither is applicable, since the street and name are from the post-war period. Nevertheless, the parchment-making course is not a completely new installation.

Up until the 20th century , where the first section of the Parchment Makers' Walk branching off from Mühlenstraße runs today, there was an old 17th century apartment hall (No. 41), which was last called Derliens Gang and whose front building was numbered Mühlenstraße 43 . Otherwise there were backyards and buildings where the street is today.

When bombing from 1942 , the area was severely affected. Derlen's corridor was destroyed, as were the surrounding buildings and, together with other historical gabled houses, the front building of the corridor on Mühlenstrasse.

During the reconstruction in the post-war period, at the beginning of the 1960s a connecting road was laid through the previously densely built-up block, which has now been cleared of rubble; towards Mühlenstraße it is congruent with the former Derlins Gang, but the section up to Aegidienstraße has no predecessor. The fact that this is not a historically evolved street, but a permanent emergency solution, can also be seen from its appearance: The parchment-making corridor runs between the unadorned rear facades and looks more like a large backyard. Its delivery function on the back of the building corresponds to the inner block courtyards of Lübeck's old town, which are all new creations of the reconstruction after the Second World War. They were created around 1960 in the course of reallocation according to the Schleswig-Holstein Reconstruction Act from the combination of rear yard plots of affected local communities.

The name Parchment Makersgang was given to the new street in 1961. It is a retort creation that does not go back to older names.
