Perieres of Chalkis
Perieres of Chalkis ( Greek Περιήρης ἐκ Χαλκίδος ) was a pirate in the 5th century BC. Together with Krataimenes of Samos he led a band of pirates. From the Sicilian base Zancle they carried out their raids.
Anaxilas , the tyrant of Rhegium , attacked Zancle from the sea with a fleet rhegischen while Gorgos and Mantiklos with a Messinian attacked army from the land side. They conquered the city and now called it Messina . Anaxilas wanted to kill all who begged for mercy and sell everyone else into slavery. But Gorgos and Mantiklos were able to convince him to spare the inhabitants, who were also Greeks. Nothing is known about the further whereabouts of the Perieres.
