Perl Foundation (TPF) is a since 2000 existing, recognized non-profit organization based in Holland ( Michigan ), United States , working for the improvement of the programming language Perl uses and to support the community of its users. It is funded by donations and is currently headed by Jim Brandt. The TPF logo is a sliced onion, an allusion to the State of the Onion reports on the current situation in Perl, which inventor Larry Wall holds annually at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention .

history

The TPF emerged from the Yet Another Society (YAS) and was founded by the then YAS co-founder Kurt DeMaagd and Kevin Lenzo, who became its first chairman. From 2002 to October 2005 the TPF was headed by Allison Randal.

construction

The management of the TPF is taken over by the board consisting of:

  • Jim Brandt, President
  • Nathan Torkington, meeting chairman
  • Dan Wright, treasurer
  • Makoto Nozaki
  • Curtis "Ovid" Poe
  • Allison Randal
  • Kurt DeMaagd

A Grants Committee decides on the allocation of the funds and the Conferences Committee takes care of the organization of Perl conferences (e.g. the YAPC :: NA). Since the TPF is a kind of self-organization by volunteers, a lot happens on individual initiative. There is little overlap between the committees .

tasks

The Foundation collects donations from companies, organizations and private individuals and uses this money to support the development of Perl 6, Parrot , important Perl modules in the CPAN , as well as extraordinary Perl projects such as pVoice , which helps disabled people to operate their computers with two buttons.

Furthermore, TPF operates web servers that provide important websites for the Perl community:

  • perl.org - central point of contact for Perl
  • perldoc.perl.org - PerlDoc: official Perl documentation
  • blogs.perl.org - central blogging platform for Perl users, which replaces the discontinued use.perl.org
  • perlmonks.org - Perl Monks: international forum for Perl programmers with a collection of knowledge
  • pm.org - Perl Mongers : local user groups
  • Pages of various Perl projects such as B. Catalyst , Maypole and POE.

The TPF also coordinates the activities of various user groups and organizes conferences such as the Yet Another Perl Conference in North America. Since 1999, TPF, in cooperation with Perl Monger and O'Reilly Verlag, has presented three people with the White Camel Award every year . This award honors outstanding and longstanding contributions to improving the language or supporting the user community.

The TPF manages the copyright to Perl 5, Perl 6.
