The Peruvian Screech Owl ( Megascops roboratus ) is a species from the family of real owls. It occurs exclusively in South America.
Appearance
With a body size of about 20 centimeters, the Peruvian Screech Owl is a small to medium-sized species within its genus. It occurs in a gray and a red-brown color morph. She has short feather ears . On the upper side of the body, the Peruvian Screech Owl has blackish longitudinal stripes and a few small dots. The face veil is gray-brown with a black-brown border. The longitudinal stripes on the underside of the body are relatively narrow. Here the plumage also shows some irregular horizontal stripes. The legs are feathered down to the toes. The eyes are yellow.
There is a possibility of confusion with the Tumbes screech owl , which is a little smaller and shorter-tailed than the Peru screech owl. The Koepcke screech owl is larger and has a more strongly drawn underside of the body. The white-throated screech owl is also larger, and it lacks feather ears.
distribution and habitat
The Peru screech owl occurs only in a relatively small area in western South America. It colonizes the catchment area of the Chinchipe and Marañón rivers in northern Peru and southern Ecuador. Presumably, this owl species is a resident bird. Their habitat are dry deciduous forests. Their height distribution ranges from 500 to 1,200 meters above sea level.
Way of life
The Peru Screech Owl is a nocturnal species of owl. It transmits in the thick foliage of trees or bushes. Their food spectrum presumably includes only insects. It breeds in tree hollows. Their reproductive biology, however, is otherwise largely unexplored.
