history

The Peter and Paul Tower is located at the southeast end of the Bad Reichenhall city wall below the Gruttenstein. The name goes back to two small churches that were located directly at the gates of the city. These were consecrated to St. Peter and St. Paul and stood there until shortly after 1800, when they fell victim to the work of destruction of secularization. The city gate Peter-und-Paul-Thörl was named after the two churches, as was the Peter-und-Paul-Gasse , where the tower is located today.

The exact date of construction of the tower is unknown, but it was probably built in the 13th century during the construction of the city wall.

The Peter and Paul Tower is one of two remaining towers of the city fortifications, the Powder Tower is only a good 100 meters east on top of the Gruttenstein. Both towers are well preserved, the Peter and Paul Tower is now used as a residential building.
