Powder Tower (Bad Reichenhall)
The powder tower is part of the medieval city wall , which was built around the town of Bad Reichenhall from the 1220s to protect the brine springs .
The tower is a listed building and is registered under the number D-1-72-114-144 in the Bavarian monument list.
General
The powder tower was built around 1275 and forms the south-eastern end of the city fortifications. It was built on the Gruttenfelsen, which drops almost vertically at this point about 20 meters. In a northerly direction, about 300 meters away, is Gruttenstein Castle , which was included in the city wall as a fortified structure.
The name suggests that gunpowder was stored in this tower for a long time . The tower is in good condition but is empty and not in use. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city and has hardly changed at all over the years.
The Powder Tower is one of two preserved towers of the city wall, the Peter and Paul Tower is a good 100 meters to the west.
Trivia
